So, you’re pregnant?

When it comes to chatting up chicks, some guys just don’t get it. No, I’ll take that back. MOST guys don’t get it. Talking to women doesn’t need to be edgy, pressuring, or slick in order to gain or hold a girl’s attention, despite what the expensive pick-up artists claim.

Trust me. I’m a woman, I know.

Sure, when my girlfriends and I are out and about for an evening, we’ll get approached by guys and if they’re doing something gimmicky or firing probing questions a mile a minute hoping they’ll eventually be allowed “in”, we’ll impatiently let them finish. Are any of us romantically intrigued? Doubtful, and even if any of us were, it’s not because of the gimmick or the barrage of edgy questions. In fact, it would be despite all that nonsense.

Finding an “in” is not nearly as difficult as guys tend to make it.

Most any girl will claim she loves a sense of humor, but it’s not the ONLY thing she looks for. She wants attraction, chemistry, and an air of romance. If she doesn’t sense those right away, no amount of quick-witted humor or over the top enthusiasm is going to help her see a guy as anything other than a desperate goofball. Remember when guys used to just hang out and act like guys? Playing it cool actually works, most of the time anyway.

Just to give you an example, I recently met a guy who thought he was being edgy in his approach, and totally missed his mark.

My division at work was doing a community service project last week, and in addition to some office tasks I was also assigned the job of photographer for the project. I was thrilled with this, since I could move around, talk to everyone, and even meet some new people.

There was one reasonably attractive guy, about my age, who I didn’t recognize. I walked up, introduced myself and we chatted briefly about what each of us does for our company. As everyone split up to join their separate project teams, he walked over, gave a jaunty smirk, and declared, “So, you’re pregnant?”

My first thought was “Wow, these t-shirts are really unflattering”, and then my next thought was “Joining a gym on my way home TODAY.”

When he saw the stricken look on my face, and realized the joke wasn’t playing, he backpedaled and tried to explain how it was funny because it obviously wasn’t true but the photog’s job for these projects is usually the girl who’s pregnant and can’t be around paint fumes or do heavy-duty landscaping.

Yeah, hilarious.

Later in the day, he approached once again, and this time made a similarly “innocent” joke about how I couldn’t be much older than he, and that the potential for my being pregnant was certainly reasonable.

Okay great, now I’m also obviously “older”? (And still appearing

pregnant?) Guys, you can see how this joking around with personal stuff can backfire, and spiral into insulting, right? I was bracing to see what awkward piece of personal info he might demand next: How much I weigh? Maybe how much I make? Ooh, perhaps he’ll find it hilarious to take a stab at whether I’m Italian, Mexican or South American? As my friend Brian said, I should have let him go ahead and shoot for the trifecta of TMI.

Instead, I took the low road, and almost drowned him with a tsunami of random personal info. Yeah, it wasn’t mature, but it sure felt good.

And then I watched the smart, attractive, but too-clueless-for-me guy walk away, wondering why he hadn’t just offered to help me take pics instead of trying to be the Howard Stern of my day.

So what’s the lesson here, guys? It’s not about going above and beyond to make a memorable impression. Girls want to be noticed, respected and appreciated. Make her feel special, not stricken, and you’ll be remembered…the right way. If she feels good about your encounter, no matter how innocent or seemingly uneventful, she’ll let you come back for more.

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA AT DPAC (Begins Thanksgiving Day!)

phantom

There are few entertainers and shows that come to the DPAC, Durham Performing Arts Center that can claim to have run for over 20 years, had more performances on Broadway than Cats, and enchanted over 12.5 million people in New York alone. The Phantom of the Opera, coming to DPAC November 26 through December 20 as part of the SunTrust Brodway series, claims these accomplishments and so many more.

The Phantom of the Opera, composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber, premiered on Broadway January 26, 1988, after a very successful start in the UK two years before. The show’s been running strong ever since, still entertaining adoring fans at the Majestic theatre on Broadway.

For those few people who’ve managed to go the 20+ years of this musical’s existence without learning what it’s about, here’s a basic summary for you: the musical is based off of the novel Le Fantôme de l’Opéra by Gaston Leroux, the story of a masked phantom who dwells beneath the Paris Opera House and harbors a deep, but unrequited love for the up-and-coming opera starlet Christine Daaé. The phantom works to develop Christine into the perfect performer, completely under his control. And if you needed this summary, then you’re one of the folks who should definitely go see it; Phantom is a cornerstone of Broadway shows.  And even if you did know the facts, why not see again the biggest show ever to come to Broadway!

Phantom will reach its 21st anniversary while it shows at the DPAC.  Don’t miss your chance to have a legendary Broadway experience; be sure to get tickets to Phantom.

Tickets are on sale now and can be purchased online at www.dpacnc.com, by phone at (919)680-2787 or at the DPAC box office. The theater is located on 123 Vivian St. in the American Tobacco District in Durham.

Wine 101 and Triangle Heart Walk

heart_walk

What do you do when you have a charity you are passionate about and want to raise money for it?  Basically all you need to be successful is to come up with a creative program your guests will enjoy and find a local company to lend a hand.  If you throw the right event, one everyone can have fun with, the people will come and so will the donations!

Just ask Donna Miller, who recently held a Triangle Heart Walk fundraiser at her favorite store, Wine 101 (link: http://www.wine101nc.com/) in Wake Forest.  Donna, a fitness professional at heart, keeps staying active and healthy at the top of her priority list.  She wants her life to exemplify good health inside and out, and is committed to sharing her knowledge and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle with everyone.  Hosting a fundraising event seems intimidating to many, but with her inspired attitude, she knew it could be a piece of cake.

Donna and her husband walked the Triangle Heart Walk (link: http://www.starttriangle.org/) this year on September 27th, their third time doing it, and wanted to do more to raise awareness than just participate in the planned activities and sponsorship fundraising.  They wanted to get others involved, because for them, it isn’t just about the money for the American Heart Association, but also about the cause and getting the message out there.  And what a message: Cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer in America!

Acknowledging that “everybody has a great cause”, Donna knew she had to think outside the box if she was going to get people involved and motivated.  She approached Joe O’Keefe of Wine 101, knowing she loves the store for their great customer service, and that Joe is community-minded like her, often hosting events and benefits.  Together they put together an approachable and welcoming evening of free wine-tasting, wine knowledge, and snacks, with a portion of the evening’s sales going into a donation to the American Heart Association.

The Wine 101 – Heart Walk event was a booming success and a win for everyone involved. What a great way to get people together!  Donna brought in a nice crowd which boosted exposure for Wine 101, and more importantly for the Triangle Heart Walk.  Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the event, and the excuse to stock up on their favorite wines for a good cause. After all, they say wine is good for the heart.

If Donna can do it, you can too.  Let her inspire you to be inspired.  There isn’t a foundation out there that would refuse any donation or effort to bring their cause to light, no matter how small. In this case, it really is the thought that counts.

Sauced Pizza Brings New York-Style Pizza and More to Glenwood South

Raleigh, NC – Mike Lombardo (Lucky B’s) and Kurt Lam have announced a new venue that brings New York-Style pizza, a complementary lunch and dinner menu, and a casual, yet upscale full bar to the popular Downtown Raleigh district known as Glenwood South.
The eatery – opening this summer – will feature not only pizza by the slice, but also appetizers, salads, calzones, and
other casual-fare menu items. An emphasis on fresh ingredients and detailed attention to service and experience is what owners Lombardo and Lam are paying careful attention to, ensuring customers a dining and bar experience that will warrant many returned visits.
“I’ve been in the bar and nightlife business for 12 years now here on Glenwood South and I’ve always felt like a New York-Style pizza restaurant would be successful, and I still do”, says Lombardo. “This is something that I know this market will appreciate – not only from a nightlife-perspective, but as a lunch, dinner, and late-night establishment catering to customers of all types. We want families to be just as welcome and comfortable here as the customers who will be in for a late-night slice.”
Aside from an appealing lunch and dinner menu, Sauced Pizza will also feature several high-definition flat screen televisions and an open layout, encouraging diners and drinkers alike to enjoy the venue for their favorite sporting events or as a stopping point for any “night out on Glenwood”. “Our goal is to have many different people come in for many different reasons”, says Lam. “That’s why we’re going to serve not only a fantastic slice of New York-style pizza, but also feature dessert selections from the well-known Hayes Barton Café & Dessertery, as well as a robust wine menu and beer selection.”
And while last call for alcohol may come at 1:30am, Lombardo and Lam are excited to offer fresh slices well past then for the hungry late-night crowd. “Serving good, fresh food well past last call is something we know is really going to set us apart”, notes Lam.
Sauced Pizza has already begun the process of making 410 Glenwood home. What Makes Eagle Ridge Golf Club a Special Golf Experience

sports_eagle_ridge

It Is Easy to Spark Your Golf Imagination Into Overdrive When it Comes to Describing What Makes Eagle Ridge Golf Club a Special Golf Experience.  This par 71, 6,904-yard track, set in a spectacular, wooded rolling terrain about 15 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina, has been a challenging and rewarding test for players of all skill levels since it opened in October 2000.

Here is the imagination part – Eagle Ridge Golf Club was designed by 1992 US Open Champion Tom Kite. He did much more than just lend his famous name to the project. It is estimated that he made almost two dozen trips to the course during its development. The characteristics of this beauty reflect the qualities that made Kite a 19-time PGA TOUR winner – a hard working attitude and the ability to hit wedge shots close.

The former Ryder Cup captain teamed up with Bob Cupp, who knows a little about golf course design himself after spending 14 years as Senior Designer for Jack Nicklaus. Just to top things off, Eagle Ridge Golf Club brought in Billy Fuller, one of the game’s finest agronomists, to build the course. How good is Fuller? When Augusta National wanted to rebuild their greens and bunkers, he’s the guy they called. So when you walk the greens of Eagle Ridge Golf Club, you are flirting with hallowed ground as well as championship design.

As a semi-private facility, you can walk on any day to this natural beauty, or, feel free to ride in one of their GPS equipped golf carts, which will indicate your exact distance to the hole. The course features six par 3’s and five par 5’s. Start enjoying all the benefits and privileges of an Eagle Ridge Golf Club membership – especially if you live in the community.

Regardless of whether or not you decide to join Eagle Ridge Golf Club, you and your guests may add great dining as a complement your outstanding golf experience. Enjoy their elegantly designed dining room or head outside to their screened-in veranda with your fellow competitors for burgers and wings.

New Restaurants in the Triangle

z_news_new_restaurants
There are tons of new places “coming soon” to the Triangle area and we’re here to keep you in the loop. Here is the latest word on the street…

There is a Carolina Ale House opening in Glenwood South.  I’m sure you already heard about that, but its worth repeating because it’s going to be amazing.  Two stories with rooftop bar? Yes, please!

Be the first to catch a glimpse of Raleigh’s most intriguing new nightspot… Noir Bar & Lounge, located in Glenwood South next to Solas.  This will be a chic European lounge with a patio.

Next up: Natty Green’s is a bangarang brewery based out of the Triad.  We’re so glad they’re bringing their brew to the Triangle.  Rumor has it they’re going in to the old Southend Brewery/Prime Only building across from 42nd Street Oyster Bar.

This isn’t just a rumor, its straight-up fact, but it needs to be in the report nonetheless.  Martin & Mary’s moved from their Cary location out to Chapel Hill.  Now you can get your denim and designer in duds in Meadowmont Village.

Aftershock

music_aftershock

Aftershock kicked off in the middle of 2005 when a guy named JD decided to get off his butt and put together that “hair metal” band he had said for years he was going to do. He placed an ad on RaleighMusic.com something along the lines of:

“Starting a cover band to focus on big hair covers and fun party songs (that you can dance to, think Bon Jovi, GnR, Def Leppard, Poison). If you love that music like I do, give me a shout. If you’re looking to cut an album, tour the world and become rich and famous doing this, don’t bother me. I’m just looking to play locally and have fun doing it.”

Or something like that. Within hours (practically), JD heard back from a singer named Rob and a guitar player named Jonny. JD already had a band name and a logo designed which should have clued Rob and Jonny in that they would be joining a control freak, but they did anyway.

JD, Rob and Jonny very quickly got together over a couple beer’s and decided to give it a go. They optimistically decided that they had three parts in place (you know, without really even hearing each other play), and set out to find a bass guitarist.  Lance became the fourth piece in the puzzle. This all happened within days, which is pretty amazing and cool.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The Best of Raleigh

The Lincoln Theatre is a great place for watching live bands. No gimmicks, no distractions – just a huge multi-tiered theatre that can hold about 600 fans and serves an impressive selection of domestics, imports and microbrews. If you’re into rock and cover bands, they’ll likely be featuring something you’ll enjoy.

According to a review by Zack Hanner: “Built in 1939, the Lincoln Theatre used to be a movie house, showing the best films of the golden age of cinema. For years it remained dormant, occasionally used as a venue for private parties. But as 2001 rolled around, Pat Dickenson and his cohorts had other ideas for this architectural gem. At the beginning of the year, they opened the theater as a venue for larger acts that might have felt cramped in smaller clubs, and the results have been outstanding.”

Southern Charm

John Wright is certainly doing things right at Glenwood Grill, one of Raleigh’s best-kept secrets. Situated in Glenwood Village, this small and cozy restaurant offers some of the best and newest Southern-style cuisine in the area. If you often have a hankering for shrimp and grits with a twist, or buttermilk fried green tomatoes with onion chutney, you must search this place out.

Why do so many of their good customers come to visit, time and time again?  Why would they choose to be in an out-of-the-way location instead of the latest “hot strip” in Raleigh?

There are lots of answers, but they all boil down to this: They simply pay attention to their customers, what they like and what they don’t.

Then there’s their approach to making sure you get in and out when you’re on the way to a concert, the ballet or a play. And, also, staying open late enough to be there if you prefer to stop by on your way home.
