Three Amazing Days of Exclusive Wine Events right here in Raleigh!

wine_1_14

February 4th – 6th

Each year in February The Triangle Wine Experience brings to you, right here in Raleigh, exclusive wine dinners and free wine tasting events with winemakers from California and all over the world. You will have the opportunity to attend auctions where you can find lots that you never thought you could find of rare vintages and oversized bottles. Vacations to Italy, Mexico, Napa Vally and Hawaii!!! Meet new friends and simply have the evening to remember full of what a glass of wine does best ~ bring people together in celebration!

“This event is now receiving national recognition. Consumers are realizing that we have depth and quality of auction lots, offering rare `cult’ Napa Valley producers and Bordeaux selections. Internationally acclaimed vintners host our winemaker dinners and our participating restaurants serve extraordinary food. And – we’re fun!”

The Triangle Wine Experience is the Triangle and Carolina’s premier wine event encompassing tastings, dinners, and a Grand Gala with Fine Wine Auction over a three day period. Winemakers from all over the world participate in this truly amazing event.

All proceeds from the Triangle Wine Experience go to the Frankie Lemmon Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to the education and support of children with special needs. The Frankie Lemmon School is a local public preschool in Raleigh NC for children ages 3 to 6 with developmental disabilities ranging from mild autism to Down’s syndrome, from sight impairment to mobility challenges. The Frankie Lemmon School is public and does not accept tuition, but with only 40% of the school’s budget coming from the North Carolina Public School Fund and rising costs of operating the school, they depend on the funds from The Triangle Wine Experience to keep them going.

GET INVOLVED:

If you can’t make all events, pick one and join me for the fun! Even if you are out of town you can help by donating wine or a product. Each year I pick a few special bottles from my collection and although it’s hard to give up and hand over, it feels really good to know that I am helping these kids out, kids I have gone to see at the school and have tugged on my heart strings. So give it up people…share the good stuff! And for any wineries out there that couldn’t attend locally we are still accepting wine donations and would love to have you participate in future events. You can contact the foundation at (919) 845-8880.

THURSDAY EVENING WINE DINNERS

When in Raleigh can you enjoy an intimate winemaker dinner at one of our fine restaurants? Thursday February 4th you will have that very opportunity! Hey, you might not be able to do everything during this 3 day event, but a wine dinner in Raleigh with a high end wine that is affordable and goes to charity sounds like a no brainer to me! Believe me, I have been to several as both a volunteer and guest, and it’s an experience that I cherish and tons of fun, not a stuffy boring wine dinner at all! There are 29 restaurants participating in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

Which wineries are involved? To name just a few, come dine with Miner Family Vineyards, Cakebread, Caymus, Kosta Browne, Patz & Hall, Reynolds Family Winery, Switchback Ridge, Duckhorn, Realm Cellars, Robert Foley or Pride. For a complete list of restaurants and wineries involved visit The Triangle Wine Experience.

FRIDAY FREE EVENT ~ Evening Sip, Shop & Sign 5-6:30pm

Winemakers will be pouring, discussing and selling their fine wines at select wine retailers. Come sample, buy a bottle and have it signed. This is a great opportunity to learn a little more about wine and make new friends while you’re at it. This event is free and no reservations are required. You’ll find me at Taylor’s Wine Shop giggling and having fun with Taylor and Gail. Join us Friday February 5th from 5-6:30 at any of the participating retail wine shops. Click here to find out which of the 15 wine stores are closest to you!

SATURDAY GRAND GALA & AUCTION
Come join me for one of the most fun nights you will have all year!! Getting all dressed up in your black tie digs with somewhere to go, drinking incredibly special wines, meeting new friends, having the opportunity to bid on and take home some rare finds that you can’t find commercially and dance the night away….. all while fighting for a great cause!

Please come join me for this grand gala with a Hollywood theme “Hollywood & Vine”. There will be two spirited auctions ~ one live and one silent. You will be delighted to see such spectacular wines, rare vintages and oversized bottles. You will see some really cool lots up for auction such as 20 (3) Liters of California wines as well as a lot with over 20 magnums! Kosta Browne, DR Stephens Estate Wines and Wind Gap have “pianos” of Wine (375’s/750’s/mags/3L/6L). You can bid on the owner’s box for a Yankees Game with Steve Reynolds that includes flight, hotel, and a DelFrisco’s private dinner. Vacation time…..there will be trips to Italy, Mexico, Hawaii, CALIFORNIA! You will find SO many wonderful things especially for the Triangle Wine Experience. The live auction will be presided over by Paul Hart of Hart Davis Hart Wine Company. After the auctions, come get your groove on dancing the night away to a live entertaining band. I would not steer you wrong my friends, I look forward to this event every year and each year, it just keeps getting better!

Cabana Tans is moving…

cabana_tans

The North Ridge location of Cabana Tans at the corner of Falls and Spring Forest is moving to a bigger and easier to find and access location. We will be moving 1/10/10 to the Celebration at Six Forks Shopping Center at the corner of Six Forks and Sawmill.

Cabana Tans would like to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and would like to remind everyone that this means a bigger location with more space and more options for better equipment and services for our clients at our usual value and low cost. Also, we want to remind everyone that this transition will take place over one weekend barring any unforeseeable complications and if this move puts the new location slightly less than convenient then perhaps any of our other 2 locations will fit you needs easily.

The Litchford Village shopping center is approximately 2.2 miles from the current North Ridge location and has been the Cabana flagship location for over 15 years with high-end advanced European sunbeds and tanning professionals. This will likely be the first choice for a number of clients living north or east of the Falls location.

While most will find that the NEW location is less than 2 miles from the current location and easily accessible via I-540, Strickland Rd. or Spring Forest, some people may find their new home at our newly remodeled and upgraded Leesville Rd. location at the corner of Leesville Rd. and Pinecrest just seconds from I-540.

No matter what location you choose, thank you for being a Cabana Tans customer and we look forward to serving you better as we head into 2010 and the future of tanning… and skincare!

Wine 101 and Triangle Heart Walk

heart_walk

What do you do when you have a charity you are passionate about and want to raise money for it?  Basically all you need to be successful is to come up with a creative program your guests will enjoy and find a local company to lend a hand.  If you throw the right event, one everyone can have fun with, the people will come and so will the donations!

Just ask Donna Miller, who recently held a Triangle Heart Walk fundraiser at her favorite store, Wine 101 (link: http://www.wine101nc.com/) in Wake Forest.  Donna, a fitness professional at heart, keeps staying active and healthy at the top of her priority list.  She wants her life to exemplify good health inside and out, and is committed to sharing her knowledge and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle with everyone.  Hosting a fundraising event seems intimidating to many, but with her inspired attitude, she knew it could be a piece of cake.

Donna and her husband walked the Triangle Heart Walk (link: http://www.starttriangle.org/) this year on September 27th, their third time doing it, and wanted to do more to raise awareness than just participate in the planned activities and sponsorship fundraising.  They wanted to get others involved, because for them, it isn’t just about the money for the American Heart Association, but also about the cause and getting the message out there.  And what a message: Cardiovascular disease is the biggest killer in America!

Acknowledging that “everybody has a great cause”, Donna knew she had to think outside the box if she was going to get people involved and motivated.  She approached Joe O’Keefe of Wine 101, knowing she loves the store for their great customer service, and that Joe is community-minded like her, often hosting events and benefits.  Together they put together an approachable and welcoming evening of free wine-tasting, wine knowledge, and snacks, with a portion of the evening’s sales going into a donation to the American Heart Association.

The Wine 101 – Heart Walk event was a booming success and a win for everyone involved. What a great way to get people together!  Donna brought in a nice crowd which boosted exposure for Wine 101, and more importantly for the Triangle Heart Walk.  Everyone who attended thoroughly enjoyed the event, and the excuse to stock up on their favorite wines for a good cause. After all, they say wine is good for the heart.

If Donna can do it, you can too.  Let her inspire you to be inspired.  There isn’t a foundation out there that would refuse any donation or effort to bring their cause to light, no matter how small. In this case, it really is the thought that counts.

Certainly Hitchcock’s most unrelenting exercise in terror, PSYCHO remains one of the most terrifying films of all time. (1960)

THE SHINING
Tuesday, October 27th

Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall
Warner Bros.; Directed by Stanley Kubrick
Rated R

Called “a masterpiece of modern horror” and “a tour-de-force of sheer terror” by the critics, Stanley Kubrick’s film is a chilling adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. THE SHINING combines eerie special effects, haunting performances by Jack Nicholson and Shelley Duvall, and an unmistakable aura of evil into a spectacular horror film. (1980)

NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD (shown in 3-D)
Wednesday, October 28th

Brianna Brown, Joshua DesRoches, Sid Haig, Johanna Black
Directed by Jeff Broadstreet
Rated R

In this 3D chiller, Barb and her brother, Johnny, arrive late for the burial of their aunt – and walk straight into a nightmare. With zombies on her heels, Barb flees the cemetery and is rescued by Ben, a local college student. The two seek refuge in the nearby farmhouse of the Cooper family, where the laid-back residents aren’t remotely prepared to have their lives turn into a horror movie. But Barb is destined for an even grimmer confrontation – with the dark secret of the pyrophobic mortician, Gerald Tovar Jr (2006)

CASPER
Thursday, October 29th

Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, Eric Idle
Universal Pictures; Directed by Brad Silberling
Rated PG

(1995)

FRANKENSTEIN
Double Feature Friday, October 30th

Boris Karloff, Colin Clive
Universal Pictures; Directed by James Whale
Black and White; Not Rated

The most famous horror film of all time. When brilliant but deranged Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) attempts to create life out of the organs of dead bodies, a grotesque, pitiful monster (Boris Karloff) is born. Screenwriter Robert Florey devised the now-famous plot twist in which the monster is accidentally given a madman’s brain adding additional terror to Mary Shelley’s original dark and foreboding tale. (1931)

Crawl for Charity on Halloween

Crawl for Cancer

To View All Local Halloween Events in the Triangle, click here.

The Crawl For Cancer has a unique mission to host events that raise money to help people affected by cancer and other disabilities. Since the creation of the Crawl For Cancer in Kansas City in the Fall of 2001, it has had an impact far beyond anything envisioned when it first started. With the help of all the volunteers, the crawl fundraisers have been able to donate thousands of dollars directly to the people that need it.

On October 17, Raleigh will be hosting a Crawl for Cancer.  Here’s how it works: teams of ten people will travel to five bars, where each team will finish four pitchers of beer before moving on to the next bar. Everyone will end up at Buckhead Saloon for an after-party with live music and beer!

You don’t need to be a celebrity to be photographed by Taste of Durham Paparazzi. Turn the pages of five progressive years of creating a welcoming and fun escape to the good life during burdensome and challenging economic times. There are various galleries of pictures at the Taste of Durham 2009 website that convey the essence of the mission of The Community Chest, Inc. (TCC): Creating positive platforms in hopes to stimulate proactive efforts to invigorate a good vibe, bring people together, nurture respect for diverse cultures, and serve many communities in various ways with a focus on arts and cultural experiences: Happiness triggered by the activities of the good life. Sit back and relive the festival through the pictures and see if they can give a glimpse and reminder of happiness, contentment, a sense of peace and possibly bliss.

Check to see if there are pictures of you, friends and family who are part of our living and growing story. If not, we hope to see you at the next festival. Flip through the fun and spontaneous pictures of Mayor Bill Bell, professional dancers showing their dance moves, and vast community members enjoying the ambiance, choice food sampling from restaurants and caterers, an array of eclectic bands and musicians, international wine and beer tasting, arts and cultural interactive activities, and the “Too Much Fun Zone” activities.

Pictures speak a thousand words and we hope they convey the story and our journey to grow a vision. The Community Chest, Inc. produces festivals and projects with old-fashioned ideals of supporting community in many ways. Beyond the festivities we hope you were inspired to welcome change, embrace cultural diversity, gain awareness of community needs, and participate in creating solutions to enrich lives and we also hope you had a BLAST!   TCC is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that supports community enrichments with innovative and distinctive project-based initiatives which produces the Taste of Durham Festival designed to offer a buffet for the senses called “Festivals within a Festival.”   It is inspired by the diversity of Durham County and serves many communities with deliberate, inclusive, and varied programming.

About XIOS

The Greek island of XIOS (pronounced khi-os), home to our family for generations, is known for its polite and peaceful residents who welcome visitors and guests with kindness and hospitality. We apply these same principles to preparing and serving traditional Greek cuisine, often paired with Greek wines of superior quality, at our family-owned and operated restaurant.

We enjoy preparing serving meals in a comfortable setting – old-world dishes with fresh and familiar ingredients that everybody knows. Xios Authentic Greek Cuisine offers a gathering spot for sharing meals with family, friends and co-workers. Some of our guests enjoy spending a romantic evening on our outdoor patio watching the sunset and sharing Mezethes (appetizers), while others prefer to linger over traditional Greek dishes, such as Mousaka or Kotopoula in our dining room. YiaYia and PaPou (Grandma and Grandpa) begin cooking in the kitchen early each morning to bring our guests homemade, fresh food six days per week.
Kirk will make sure your experience is top notch and Denise and Zoe are sure to stop by with a smile. No matter what your occasion, all of us hope to see you soon.To make a reservation, or for more information please feel free to contact the dining room directly at (919)363-5288.

2009 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic

2009 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic

The 2009 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic will be held at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Sunday, August 16th.  The Classic is proud to have raised $14 million for cancer research in its fifteen-year history, and this year promises to be very exciting as it makes a fitting return to Raleigh.

You are invited to attend and cover this year’s Classic and related events. I have enclosed a media packet containing information about this year’s event.  As always, we will have a Media Center for your use, and staff to assist you. Our media staff will be glad to help with interviews, logistics, on-course transportation and with information during this event.

The Media Center will be located directly beside the clubhouse at the Lonnie Poole Golf Course.  The Media Center will provide you with easier access to the main areas of the golf course. Please be aware, there will be limited parking at the main clubhouse and you may be asked to park at the Alumni Center across the street.

For your convenience, I have enclosed a credentials application form. Please return this form as soon as possible so that we can count on your attendance and accommodate any needs you might have. We will have your credentials waiting for you at the Media Center. You may also pick up your credentials at Friday or Saturday evening’s social events.

I would recommend Saturday’s practice round as an opportunity to interview the various celebrities who are playing in The Classic. They are usually more accessible then, and since Saturday is not open to the general public, the course is less crowded. Please check The Classic’s website, www.golfclassic.org for an updated list of scheduled celebrities. Please let me know if we can assist you with interviews and feel free to contact me at (919) 812-1354 if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing you at the 2009 Jimmy V Celebrity Golf Classic.

Sincerely,
